How to Make Doll Wigs

How to Make Doll Wigs
The hair that comes attached to your doll doesn't have to be permanent. There are ways to retool the hair--or you can simply make wigs of different types for the doll, which is what this article will teach you how to do. (Remember that the wig doesn't have to be made out of human hair. Other materials can be used also.).

Things You'll Need

  • Necessary Items:
  • Doll head
  • Plastic wrap
  • Transparent craft glue
  • Light fabric pen
  • Wig material (chose one):
  • Human hair
  • Dyed mohair
  • Fur
  • Plastic netting
  • Packing peanuts
  • Chenille yarn
  • Feathers
  • Christmas tinsel
  • Silk flowers
  • Easter-basket grass
  • Pantyhose
  • Ribbon bows
  • Raffia
  • Curling ribbon
  • Upholstery fringe

Instructions

1. Choose a style. You may already know how you would like to your doll’s new hair to look. If you don't, look at fashion and celebrity magazines or television shows to get some ideas. Knowing how you want to style the hair is very important in helping you determine what type of material you will need to use for the wig.

2. Gather the material you've decided to use for the doll’s hair. You can use any of the items listed in the “Things You'll Need” section of this article.

3. Bring the doll to a stable work area. You will need to have the doll will on hand to make an appropriate-sized wig.

4. Take the light fabric pen and mark the hairline of the doll. This will be your wig base, and it will guide you in determining where the material will go to make the hair.

5. Take the plastic wrap and cover the doll's head. Make sure the plastic wrap matches the wig base. Cut off any lose wrap. The plastic wrap should be smooth and not bunch up in any areas.

6. Take the craft glue and spread it evenly over the plastic wrap. Be careful! Do not let excess glue run down and onto the doll.

7. Place the wig material on the glue-covered plastic wrap. Make sure you are gluing the wig material to match the style you initially chose. For instance, do not glue all of the wig material facing the back of the head when you want bangs or hair on the sides. The optimum solution is to glue the material in a circle around the entire head. That way, you'll have some flexibility when it comes to styling.

8. Allow the glue to dry completely. After it has dried, you can either take off the wig and move on to another one, or keep the wig on the doll’s head and style it further. If you are using human hair for the doll, there are many ways that you can curl or style it. Follow the link in "Resources" for tips.
